“It is a privilege to greet the inauguration of the Bhaktivedanta International Centre of Excellence for Caitanya Vaiṣṇava Studies as a satellite centre of the Department of Sanskrit, University of Calcutta, hosted at the Bhaktivedanta Research Centre in Kolkata.
From its beginnings in sixteenth-century Bengal, Caitanya Vaiṣṇavism has been not only a tradition of devotion but one of learning of grammar, poetics, and theology argued with philosophical precision, preserved in a vast literature that still awaits full scholarly attention. Over the past century it has also become a global tradition, carried far beyond Bengal. A centre devoted to its study is therefore both timely and overdue.
My hope is that it will become a place where texts are handled with rigour, questions are asked freely, and a new generation learns to study this remarkable tradition with both sympathy and critical care.”
